Climate Change: The IPCC 2021 Report

The recently published climate report from the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warms that global warming has already had an “irreversible” impact on the planet.

Their report is the first major review of the science of climate change since 2013 and “is a code red for humanity”, says the UN chief.

As global warming is affecting weather around the world, the landmark study warns of increasingly extreme heatwaves, droughts and flooding, and a key temperature limit being broken in just over a decade. In fact, hot extremes including heatwaves have become more frequent and intense since the 1950s, while cold events have become less frequent and less severe.

With almost certainty, the IPCC’s report says, “it is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, oceans and land”.

The report continues by saying that the warming we’ve experienced so far has changed many of the planet’s support systems and that oceans will continue to warm and become more acidic. Mountain and polar glaciers will continue melting for decades or centuries.

One key aspect of the report is the expected rate of temperature rise and what it means for the safety of humanity.

Almost every nation on Earth signed up to the goals of the Paris climate agreement set in 2015, which aims to keep the rise in global temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius this century and to pursue efforts to keep it under 1.5 degrees Celsius.

To conclude, while this report is clearer and more confident about the downsides to warming, scientists are more hopeful that if we can cut global emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero by the middle of this century, we can halt and possibly reverse the rise in temperatures.

So, what does this mean for our business?

In line with government targets, we’ve made a promise to be a carbon negative and zero waste business by 2030. We’re already making changes to how we operate our business:

  • Conscientious designs: we design with product lifecycle and recyclability in mind and envision to recycle, reuse and repurpose all products
  • Package responsibly with cardboard and paper
  • Our office and factory are powered by energy from 100% renewable sources including biomass and on-shore and off-shore windfarms
  • Our commercial team is 100% climate positive
  • Electric vehicle charging on-site

But we know it doesn’t stop there. We’re continually investing in our future and will be making more changes along the way to our 2030 goal.
