TESCO HORTI

Creating a Floral & Gifting Destination for Tesco.

Tesco set out to rethink how customers shop plants, flowers, and garden essentials - not as standalone items, but as part of a connected, cross-shop journey.

SDI TESCO @LCVISUALS-14

Their Store Design and Category Teams imagined a new horticulture destination: cohesive, intuitive, and better aligned with how customers actually shop — by occasion, not by category.

Flowers aren’t bought in isolation. They’re part of a wider gifting moment, sitting naturally alongside cards, celebratory drinks, and thoughtful add-ons.

The challenge was to design a space that reflected this behaviour - bringing flowers into the heart of gifting, rather than leaving them as a standalone category.

The Brief:

  • Develop a design-led horticulture destination that unified plants, flowers, and seasonal ranges.
  • Improve navigation, dwell time, and cross-shop flow across adjacent categories.
  • Build prototypes, test in live stores, and refine based on colleague + customer behaviours.
  • Deliver fixtures that were scalable, durable, and operationally simple - without compromising design intent.

Working from Tesco’s sketch and design intent, we expanded and engineered the full fixture suite - applying anthropometric data to ensure comfort, accessibility, and effortless customer interaction.

  • Proper ventilation and drainage for living plant products
  • Effective stock rotation
  • Operational simplicity with minimal loose or damage-prone components

Prototyping
& Approvals

We built full prototypes and guided them through Tesco’s internal approval process, ensuring every detail met both creative expectations and operational needs.

Trial Installation

Cheshunt and Wokingham were selected as the initial pilot stores due to their strong category performance and customer demographics. After installation, a further 10 trial stores were added to refine fixture performance based on real-world use and colleague feedback.

Manufacture
& Delivery

Once trial learnings were embedded, we progressed designs into technical packs, manufacture drawings, and final production — creating a fixture family ready for future rollout.

The new Horti destination delivered far more than an aesthetic uplift.

  • Improved navigation and flow encouraged deeper cross-shop behaviour.
  • Better presentation of living plants reduced waste and supported freshness.
  • Clearer category cues helped customers understand the space instantly.
  • Increased dwell time led to stronger engagement across adjacent categories.
  • A scalable, sustainable fixture suite now aligns with Tesco’s long-term design direction.

The Outcome?

A horticulture destination that feels intentional, inspiring, and genuinely helpful - integrating cross-shop opportunities to support one-stop shopping and maximise sales across gifting occasions.
